Ac
ne and post-acne scarring are two of the many conditions we treat at Santa Fe Skin Insitutue. Acne is a condition that can have so many effects on your life. It can impact you emotionally, physically and socially. You may be currently suffering from acne breakouts, know someone who has had acne or maybe even have a personal history of acne. First, let’s talk a little bit about the causes of acne. It can be caused by build up of dead skin cells, excessive oil production, bacterial overgrowth and hormones. In conjunction with its these four components, add in mask wearing, an all too familiar practice we are all familiar with. This causes friction and rubbing on the skin that can actually lead to breakouts. Here are some of easy skin care tips that you can follow at home to help fight some of the above causes of acne:
-Wash each problem area each morning with a benzoyl peroxide face wash. This will help with the bacterial overgrowth on the skin. This solution can stain towels so make sure to use a white towel to dry the area after washing.
- Moisturize your skin with a product that is non-comedogenic. This will help to keep the dead skin cells from building up and the pores from clogging.
-Apply a retinoid to the entire face at night (a prescribed formula is recommended as it penetrates into the skin more effectively). This can cause some dryness, so start with applying once a week and work up to every night. Be sure to apply moisturizer after this application.
-Apply a sunscreen with at least 50 spf daily as retinoids can cause sensitivity to the sun. Sunscreen also helps to prevent darkening of any acne scars.
Acne can have some long term effects on the skin as well. This is known as post-acne scarring. There are various treatments that can help with this such as RF Microneedling and chemical peels.
One thing to remember is that you are not alone in your journey with acne. There are many options available to help combat acne breakouts and post acne scarring.
